Under any other conditions, this would be okay. She didn’t know what to do. She loved it here, but she couldn’t risk being exposed. She loved him, but she didn’t want him to be hurt. Being a vampire was a hard job to fill. She didn’t know where to begin to explain what happens when you are turned. The rules, the precautions… She didn’t want to drag him into it. So in her elegant handwriting, she wrote...
I didn’t want to hurt you. I wanted to stay. But I must go.
I don’t know if we will ever meet again. I’m sure I will regret
this someday, but I know it is right. I bid you farewell, my love.
I will never forget.
Love you forever,
A teardrop escaped her hazel eyes and fell to the piece of pale paper. She folded her heart inside the small note and left it on her table. That way, he wouldn’t be harmed. She couldn’t risk hurting him, or even killing him, in an attempt to turn him. It wasn’t right. It wasn’t fair. Why did they have to be separated like this? Why did she have to be a monster? What would he think of her after he saw her words? So many questions were left unanswered as she stepped out of the room, suitcase in hand. She sighed as she wiped a tear from her cheek and started toward the elevator. She heard footsteps behind her. She turned to see him at her door. She turned back to the elevator quickly and pressed the button. The door opened almost suddenly and as she stepped inside, she heard the door to what used to be her apartment open. She saw him step in as the elevator door closed. She had to calm herself to keep from going into a fit of sobs.
She felt stiff as she hailed a cab in the busy New York streets. A polite man stopped and got her bags into the trunk as she sat in the rear. She looked up to see him watching her. She thought she heard him call her name, but one can’t be so sure in the noisy atmosphere of the city. She jumped as the driver asked her destination. “The nearest airport, please.”
She was quiet for the whole ride. Once in a while, a tear would roll down her cheek as she watched the moon rise in the sky. It took them 45 minutes to get to the airport. She paid the man and retrieved her suitcase. Once inside, she found the service desk and asked for the next flight to Chicago.
“A gambler, eh?” the woman asked in a smug tone.
“No. I’m just visiting a friend.”
“Oh. The next flight leaves at 9:45 a.m. tomorrow. Would you like me to find a hotel for you?”
“It’s okay. I’ll find one close. Thank you.” She walked out on the streets and saw the hotel. It looked 5-star, but it was close and she had money. Years of watching stock markets and studying the patterns worked out after all. The bellhop loaded her bags onto a cart as she walked to the front desk. “I would like a room for tonight.”
“One night? That will be four hundred and ninety-five dollars.” She paid the girl and she got her key. She was on the third floor. The bellhop followed her to the room listed on the key and unloaded the bags.
“Anything else, miss?” he asked.
“No. I’m okay. Thank you.” She gave him a tip and watched him walk into the hall. She had not noticed that she was hungry until that moment. She felt her fangs poking through her gums and sighed. Where was she going to get blood here? She stepped out onto the balcony and looked down at the people below. She saw a man walking down the street on a cell phone. She considered getting him, but no. She had not fed from a human in years. She wasn’t about to break that. Then, she saw it. A stray cat making its way toward the alley. Very easy and very quick. Nobody would notice one stray cat…
In a matter of seconds, she was full and back in the room. Nobody had seen her. The cat felt no pain and no humans were hurt. She sunk into a chair next to a table filled with the latest celebrity magazines. She didn’t care about celebrities at the moment. She was wondering where he was. She had been sulking for a while when she heard her cell phone ring. The name on the caller ID read ‘Cameron’. It was him. She let it ring three times and she picked up. “Hello?”
“Allie? Is it you? Where are you? I’ve looked everywhere! I got your note. What do you mean you didn’t want to hurt me?”
“It means what it says. I can’t stay here.” The words tasted like poison on her tongue.
“Can’t we talk?” he pleaded.
“I’ll only hurt you if I stay. You don’t understand.”
“I’m coming. Stay there, wherever ‘there’ is. I’ll find you. If it takes me all night. I love you Allie and I’ll do anything for you.” He said as he hung up.
“I love you too…” she whispered. “You stubborn ass, I love you…”
She fell asleep suddenly. She just felt drained. She was awakened by a knock on her door. She looked at the clock. It was 2:15 a.m., She opened the door and all she saw was a flash of blue jean jacket run in. She couldn’t believe it.
“I told you I’d find you.” Cameron said. He looked as if he hadn’t slept in days, the dark circles prominent under his eyes. She wanted to slap him and kiss him at the same time.
“Why did you find me? Don’t you understand?”
“Allie, I don’t understand. And I don’t give a damn. All I know is that my heart stopped beating when I read that note. I don’t want you to leave. I love you.” He looked desperate and tired.
“I love you too. That’s why I must leave.” She said.
“Why? Why do you have to leave if you love me?”
“Because… I can’t tell you.”
“Try me.” He challenged.
“I can’t explain it. You would hate me. Just let me go.”
“I can’t do that. I would die, Allie. Don’t you understand?”
“I’m a vampire! Now do you understand why I must leave? I will only bring you harm! I could kill you in an instant!” She yelled. She instantly regretted it when she saw the look on his face. He was quiet for a minute.
“So?” He said. She was outraged.
“So? So is all you can say? Cameron, I’m a monster! Don’t you see?” She felt the hot tears running down her face as she spoke.
“I don’t think you are a monster. Don’t say that.” He wiped a tear from the corner of her eye. “Allie, whatever you may be, I’ll still love you. I don’t care that you are a vampire. I don’t think you are crazy. I just don’t want you to leave.”
“Cameron… You were always stubborn. But this is for your own good. Please leave.” She said.
“Like hell I will.” He said. He pulled her into his arms and he wouldn’t let go when she struggled against him. Finally, she gave up and looked into his dark eyes. “Allie, I’ll never leave you.” He said as he bent down to kiss her. He pulled away and looked at her. “I want you to change me. Right here, right now. Bite me.” He smiled at his pun.
“No. I will not condemn you to this life.” She said.
“Please Allie. I want to be with you. Only you. Forever and for eternity.”
“You don’t know what you are getting yourself into.” She said. But she gave in to his eyes. She felt her fangs emerge and she leaned in to his throat…
